2nd Street NW
(Street sidewalk, curb & gutter installation)
This project consist of the construction of 860 linear feet of sidewalks, curb & gutter along west side of 2nd Street NW (Brown Mill Neighborhood). The improvements span from Cabarrus Ave W to Lyric Ave NW. This project addresses storm water issues as well as pedestrian safety.
Booker Drive Realignment
The City of Concord was awarded $103,998 in American Recovery Act funds to carry out project activities relating to the realignment of Booker Drive at the intersection of Salem Street. In conjunction with the road realignment, approximately 1,516 linear feet of curb and gutter, 842 square yards of sidewalk, and 6 concrete wheelchair ramps were installed.
The project borders a 44-unit, independent living senior facility, named The Villas at Logan Gardens, which was completed in April 2011. This improvement created safe ingress and egress for the senior living facility and safer, more efficient traffic flow through the neighborhood. The Villas at Logan Gardens
Construction of the new 44-unit independent senior living facility, Villas at Logan Gardens, was completed in April 2011. The facility contains 32 one-bedroom apartments with sizes ranging from 700 to 950 square feet and 12 two-bedroom apartments with 1,059 square feet. The cost to construct this facility was approximately $5,100,000. The development was funded primarily from tax credits and private sources. The City provided a $355,586 HOME-funded, low-interest loan to help with the development.

Clearwater Artist Studios
CDBG funds are being used to create a catalyst for neighborhood revitalization with the Gibson Village community.
The first phase of renovations to Clearwater Artist Studios, the city’s former electric operations center, is complete. Artists are currently leasing nine studios from which they work to create, teach, and sell art. A 2,200 square foot gallery enables the artists to hold exhibitions of their work.
Site improvements have been completed. The next phase of the improvements will include further renovation of interior space within the site. Once fully renovated, Clearwater Artist Studios will contain over 30 studios, a gallery, a community market space, and a café. The adjacent Village Greenway and open space will offer opportunities for outdoor concerts and events.

Hawthorne Street Redevelopment
One of the City’s more recent endeavors was the redevelopment of Hawthorne Street (historically known as the Highland area) on which nine parcels, many with deteriorated homes, were purchased by the city. The existing homes were demolished, the street widened, and storm drainage, curb and gutter, new street lighting and sidewalks installed. This resulted in nine parcels on which to build new houses. To date, six homes have been constructed and sold to eligible first time homebuyers. The selling price of the homes was between $115,000 and $150,000. Homes will be constructed on the three remaining lots some time in the future and will be available for purchase by eligible first time home buyers. The City is continuing its efforts to build affordable housing for the citizens of Concord. This single family Folk Victoria style house (1128 square feet) features a spacious living room, separate dining area, and a private master bedroom suite with double-closets.
