Intepretation:

The population of Concord has grown substantially since the 1990 Census. The total population has more than doubled during the 10 year period. This is due largely to the fact that the city limits of Concord has grown from 23 square miles in 1990 to 51 square miles in 2000, a 125% increase in size. The population growth is also due to the general trend of growth in the Charlotte metropolitan area of which Concord is a part.

Although the Black or African American population in the city has increased from 5607 in 1990 to 8450 in 2000 (a 50% increase), the Black or African American percentage of the total city population has decreased from 20.5% in 1990 to 15.1% in 2000. This is due to the fact that the populations of races other than Black or African American have increased at a faster pace during the 10 year period.

The Hispanic population has increased from 0.4% in 1990 to 7.8% in 2000, a 1900% increase. This is due to two primary reasons. First, there is a general trend of Latino immigration into the southeast United States in the past decade. Secondly, the 2000 Census has counted Hispanic populations differently from the method used in 1990. In 1990, a person indicated that they were either of Hispanic origin or not. In 2000, a person could belong to other racial categories as well as indicate that they are of Hispanic origin (see the note below).

Note: Hispanic/Latino origin is not considered a race category. Race and Hispanic/Latino data are obtained from a separate question on the census 2000 questionnaire. Therefore, a person can be of any race and also be of Hispanic/Latino origin.

Results from the 2000 Census became available in 2001.    List of Census 2000 data products
