CAPTAIN JOHN TIERNEY
Support Services Commander
Captain John Tierney grew up in Concord and graduated from Concord High School in 1990. He then graduated from UNCC with a degree in Criminal Justice in 1995. He initially worked for IBM upon graduation but soon realized his heart was not in it, so he decided to start his career in law enforcement. In 1996, Captain Tierney was hired by the Concord Police Department. From there, he attended Basic Law Enforcement Training and upon graduation, was assigned to the Patrol Division.
Captain Tierney spent his first two years with the department on patrol and then transferred to the Criminal Investigation Division where he spent the next nine years. While working in investigations, Captain Tierney received both his Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate and his General Instructor Certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission. He has attended hundreds of hours of specialized law enforcement training at various agencies and institutions throughout the state.
At the beginning of 2006, Captain Tierney was promoted to Sergeant and remained in the Detective Division. He worked at this position for the next two years before being reassigned to patrol in 2010. He was then placed in the Professional Standards Division until being promoted to the rank of Captain in April of 2012. Captain Tierney now oversees the Support Services Division, which consists of Training and Standards, Recruiting, Records Management, School Resource Officers and Special Investigations.
Captain Tierney believes that a diverse department is vital to building strong relationships within the community. "The Department and the community benefit most when the department is a direct reflection of the community in which we police." To make this happen, we hire the most qualified people while keeping in mind the needs of both the department and the community.
