Concord Weekly Update for April 13, 2012

Did you know?
Did you know that Concord Regional Airport handled over 400 Boeing 737-800 series aircraft operations for the NASCAR teams last season without losing one piece of luggage? These aircraft weigh between 115,000 and 154,000 pounds, and can carry as many as 134 passengers. The 737-800 aircraft is about 125 feet long, has a wing span of 117 feet, the top of its tail is 41 feet off the ground. The aircraft can hold a maximum of 6,875 gallons of fuel.
 
Viva Verde Earth Fest THIS WEEKEND!
The third annual Viva Verde Earth Fest (a partnership between Concord, Kannapolis, and Cabarrus County) will be 10:00-3:00 on Saturday, April 14 at North Cabarrus Park. VVEF is a festival in honor of Earth Day that celebrates nature and environmental stewardship, providing opportunities for environmental education in a fun, family-friendly way! There will be information booths, live music, recycling opportunities, games, and more. Be sure to check out the event’s Facebook page; information is also available on the concordnc.gov.
 
Wish you had an iPad? Attendees at VVEF will have the opportunity win a free refurbished iPad 2. To highlight the importance of reuse, VVEF organizers will award an Apple Certified Refurbished 16GB iPad 2 with Wi-Fi to one lucky winner who registers for the drawing at the event. Visit concordnc.gov for details.

Highlights of the April 12 City Council Meeting

Presented a Proclamation recognizing the week of April 29 - May 6, 2012 as Soil & Water Stewardship Week. 
 
Presented a Proclamation recognizing the month of April 2012 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. 
 
Presented at retirement plaque to Police Officer Vivian Stegall for 30 years of service to the City of Concord.
 
Conducted a public hearing and adopted an ordinance for the requested annexation of a parcel of land owned by Carl A. Propst, Jr. and Angela P. Propst. 
 
Conducted a public hearing and adopted an ordinance for the requested annexation of a parcel of land owned by Shea Real Estate Investments, LLC/John F. Shea, Jr.  Â
 
Recognized the Hallstead Community Neighborhood Watch Association into the City's Recognized Neighborhood Program.
 
Established after hours public parking times with corresponding signage in the Municipal Parking Deck.
 
Adopted a bond order authorizing the issuance of $17.3 million of utilities systems revenue refunding bonds, producing an estimated net present value savings of 11 percent or $2.2 million.
 
Authorized the Housing Department to apply for the ROSS Family Self-Sufficiency Grant and the Housing Choice Voucher Family Self-Sufficiency Grant.
 
Authorized the City Manager to execute the Municipal Agreement for the NCDOT Safe Routes to School Grant in the amount of $100,000. 
 
Authorized Concord Kannapolis Area Transit to apply for the FY 2012 Federal Transit Administration State of Good Repair and Cleans Fuels Grant programs.
 
Accepted the 2011 Federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant program for the Department of Fire & Life Safety in the amount of $456,480.
 
Approved a contract with Carolina Quality Construction, LLC for filter maintenance at Hillgrove Water Treatment Plant.
 
Adopted a resolution authorizing the sale of City property located adjacent to Cabarrus Avenue to the North Carolina Department of Transportation for the purpose of the bridge replacement project B-3421.
 
Received a voluntary annexation petition, and adopted a resolution setting a public hearing for annexation of a parcel of land owned by Roberta United Methodist Church with a tentative date of May 10, 2012. 
 
Approved street closure and partnership requests from the Concord Downtown Development Corporation (CDDC) for the 2012 Spring Into Arts Festival and Union Street Live concert series.
 
City updates Blackboard Connectâ„¢ service
After several years of use, the City of Concord has updated its Blackboard Connect™ service to provide enhanced communications options to residents and enable community leaders to reach the public more quickly and effectively, helping keep them safe and better informed. Blackboard Connect enables officials to quickly deliver critical messages, including emergency alerts and important announcements, via phone, text, and email. Concord is holding a community-wide data drive, encouraging residents to verify and register their contact information in the system’s secure Connect Access Portal, where they can also manage their message settings, including their preferred language and mode of contact. Visit concordnc.gov for details.

Concord Youth Council new member application available
The City of Concord Youth Council is currently accepting applications for the 2012-13 school year. All rising ninth through eleventh graders residing in Cabarrus County and attending a public, private, or home school are encouraged to apply. The application deadline is May 11, 2012. Concord History Walk
Saturday, April 14
1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Downtown Concord
Costumed interpreters, uniformed reenactors, walking tours of historic buildings, and live music bring our past to life. Includes grand opening of new Concord museum inside Historic Courthouse. Concludes at 4:00 p.m. with free outdoor jazz concert by Rowan Big Band All-Stars. Free admission. Family-friendly event co-sponsored by Cabarrus County Community Foundation, Shoe Show, Inc., and Historic Cabarrus Association. www.historiccabarrus.org
