Temporary Closure on Cabarrus Avenue W August 8 and 9
Monday, August 06, 2012

CONCORD – Motorists who travel through Cabarrus Avenue W in Concord will experience a brief detour on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. The closure will help crews relocate utilities in anticipation of NCDOT’s upcoming bridge replacement project over the Southern Railway. Cabarrus Avenue W will be closed over the railway beginning early on Wednesday, August 8 and is expected to reopen late on Thursday, August  9.
Motorists who wish to travel on Cabarrus Avenue W between the roundabout and Powder Street SW should follow the posted detour, using Corban Avenue SW and Scott Street SW as an alternate route. Visit the Concord Interactive Traffic Map for more details.
This project is part of NCDOT’s effort to replace the Cabarrus Avenue Bridge over the Southern Railway. In March, NCDOT awarded a $4.5 million contract to Blythe Development Co. to replace the current bridge, which was built in 1917. Structural work on the project is scheduled to be finished by Sept. 14, 2014, and final vegetation work should be complete by March 11, 2015.
The City of Concord is participating to enhance the project with decorative bridge railing, lights, and sidewalks. This finished project will feature a straighter, safer bridge and the closure of the at-grade rail crossing on Corban Avenue near Scott Street.
The Cabarrus Avenue bridge project will continue improvements along the corridor that serves as a major gateway into Historic Downtown Concord. Completed projects include the roundabout at the intersection with Old Charlotte Road, and a decorative median, sidewalks, bike lanes, and other enhancements between Warren C. Coleman Boulevard and Old Charlotte Road.
NCDOT is also planning to resurface 1.5 miles of Cabarrus Avenue between Branchview Drive (NC 3) and Powder Street SW by June 30, 2013.
