Vote for Union Street in statewide people’s choice competition
Thursday, February 28, 2013

CONCORD – Concord’s historic Union Street has been named one of six finalists for the Great Main Street People’s Choice Award! The award is part of the North Carolina Great Places competition, sponsored by the state’s professional planners. And it’s up to you to vote!

The North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA-NC) is hosting the competition to celebrate great places in North Carolina, and the communities that sustain them. This is the second year of the contest.
Union Street’s nomination reads: Well-travelled visitors to Downtown Concord consistently remark that Union Street is one of, if not THE, most beautiful “main streets” in North Carolina. Union Street’s residential approach to Downtown under the magnificent street tree canopy fronting stately historic homes is impressive in itself. The Downtown business district, while modest in area, is highlighted by two National Register historic districts. Within these districts is a diverse offering of shops, restaurants, galleries, gardens, and museums, making it Cabarrus County’s most unique business district. The beauty and businesses of Union Street draw patrons from throughout Cabarrus County and the Charlotte region.
In addition to bragging rights and community pride, the 2013 Great Places selected will be featured on the APA-NC website, in a press release, and at events.  The selected places, which will each receive a framed certificate, will also be recognized at the annual APA-NC conference.
