Public-private partnership results in first solar energy project on City facility

The City of Concord’s Downtown Municipal Parking Deck on Cabarrus Avenue has a new look. Solar modules have been installed on the deck's top level, providing shade to 32 parking spaces. The nearly $500,000 project, owned by a private investor, was funded in part through a North Carolina Main Street Energy II Grant. Power produced from the solar array will be sold back to the energy grid.

2012 Urban Archery season set for January 14 - February 18

The City of Concord will participate in North Carolina’s Urban Archery season for the second time in 2012. Hunting and fishing in North Carolina is regulated by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission (WRC). The WRC gives municipalities the option of participating in a specified Urban Archery season by submitting a letter of intent to participate in the season along with a map clearly defining the area to be included in the season.

The established dates for North Carolina’s 2011 Urban Archery season are January 14 - February 18, 2012.

Help us help you: scheduling bulky waste collection

To provide better and more efficient service, the City of Concord collects bulky and electronic waste on customers' regularly scheduled garbage days. The City asks that all customers call in to schedule bulky and electronic waste collection a minimum of two business days before their regularly scheduled garbage collection.

Staying safe: how we deliver City waste and recycling collection services during inclement weather

As the season of colder temperatures and winter weather approaches, so does the risk of unsafe road conditions. We want to remind everyone of the City policy for garbage and recycling collection if we experience unsafe road conditions due to adverse weather.

The City of Concord’s goal is to provide reliable and cost-effective solid waste and recycling collection for City residents throughout the year. When adverse weather occurs that may impact or interrupt these services, every reasonable effort will be made to minimize the interruption and to resume collection service as soon as road conditions will allow.

Don’t stress; it’s only a test: nationwide EAS test planned for November 9

On Wednesday, November 9 at 2:00 p.m., people across the nation will hear the familiar tones of the Emergency Alert System. However, for the first time, this test will happen across the nation, all at the same time.

The first-ever nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) will provide federal, state, and local officials the opportunity to make sure vital life-safety information can be communicated from the nation’s capital to the public via broadcasters and cable operators.

Caring Concord coworkers assist in recovery and rehabilitation of injured hawk

Friday’s release of the Cooper’s hawk began a few months ago with the concern of some coworkers in the Transportation Department. On July 8, Daniel Johnson, Shane Herrin, and Chris Holshouser in the Signals Division were returning to their shop in downtown Concord. One of the men found an injured hawk lying in the middle of Spring Street near Coltrane-Webb Elementary School.

It hasn’t happened just yet, but we’re on the verge of it. Leaves are getting ready to drop off the trees by the thousands. Our yards will be covered. Ideally, they’d just lie there and rot…Mother Nature’s way of composting. But, then that would ruin our lawns.
