Community feedback needed for northwest Concord's first park

CONCORD – The City of Concord Parks and Recreation Department is seeking public input to help guide the development of the City's first park in the northwest region of Concord.

Development of a Community Park in the northwest region of Concord is a City Council goal, and top priority of the Comprehensive Parks and Recreation Master Plan. The park site is located at 1252 Cox Mill Road, directly north of Cox Mill Elementary School, and across the street from Cox Mill High School. The total site is about 28 acres, 16 of which can be developed with active park amenities, and 12 acres within the floodplain can be developed with more passive recreation amenities, such as greenways and trails.

The City is evaluating a broad range of amenities and services to potentially offer to the citizens at this park location. Current ideas to consider include indoor amenities within a recreation center/community center, and/or outdoor amenities such as sport fields, courts, a splash pad, greenways, trails and connectivity, disc golf, playgrounds, a dog park, shelters and other facilities. The City hopes to consider additional ideas based on the public feedback received.

The City has partnered with Woolpert, which operates a Charlotte office specializing in park planning and design, to prepare concepts and a final master plan for the property.

The first step in the development of this park is to engage with members of the community through strong public participation. The public is asked to complete an online survey to provide insight on recreation and park facility.  Information received will help park planners create the best possible physical layout and recreational facilities for the new park.

The survey is available online at until October 18, 2020.
