Did you know the Concord Fire Department has been involved in establishing the North Carolina Firefighter Cancer Alliance, which is dedicated to educating, supporting, and helping firefighters in the battle against occupational cancer (the number one killer of firefighters)? Today, NCFCA released a documentary explaining how the life of a firefighter can change in just one moment and what the Concord Fire Department is doing to stop the epidemic. Highlights of the August 9 City Council Meeting

Administered the Oath of Office to newly appointed Board of Adjustment member Jim Macdonald.

Presentation of the 2017 NC Area Wide Optimization Award for Coddle Creek and Hillgrove Water Treatment Plants.

Conducted public hearings pursuant to NC General Statutes Sec. 158-7.1 and offered contracts for three year / 85% tax based Economic Development Incentive Grants to: 1) Project Meadows to locate at 700 Pitts School Road NW and 2) Project Griffin to locate at the intersection of Poplar Tent Road and International Drive.

Conducted a public hearing and adopted a zoning map amendment for recently annexed property located at 10560 Harris Rd from Cabarrus County LDR (Low Density Residential) to City RV-CD (Residential Village Conditional District) in order to establish a single-family attached (townhome) development.

Accepted the Public Art Advisory Committee's recommendation to approve the design of the Gibson Village Neighborhood Identity Public Art Project, approve a location for the display of the art on City property, and accept the Gibson Village Neighborhood Association's donation of the art to the City.

Adopted an ordinance amending the City of Concord Code of Ordinances, Section 18-36, Permanent food cart vendors.

Consented to the Assignment and Assumption of Lease between Performance Aircraft Leasing, Inc. and Land Air & Sea, LLC and authorized staff to enter a new lease with Land Air & Sea, LLC.

Authorized the City Manager to negotiate and execute a purchasing contract to acquire the Diamond Aviation 25-2, LLC Hangar.

Entered into Project Agreements with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) for: 1) Congestion Management Enhancement on US 601 from Flowes Store Road/Miami Church Road to Zion Church Road, 2) Downtown Pedestrian Signal Upgrade at six intersections, and 3) the Union Street S Sidewalk Extension.

Exhibit
: Visual Strategies: a Collaborative Project
ClearWater Artist Studios in Concord is pleased to be collaborating with local artist/ curator, Mikel Frank, to realize an exciting and unique art exhibit and related events through August 27. "
Visual Strategies: A Collaborative Project" is in conjunction with the Global Art Project (GAP) organization, whose founder, Carl Heyward, on the West Coast is co-curator of the exhibition. Collaboratively constructed artworks are on exhibit from all over the world; three live-collaborative-painting events are free and open to the public.  See clearwaterartists.com for details and links to social media.

TOMORROW: Family Collaboration Painting Day Saturday, August 11
Sessions at 11am and 2pm (ending 4pm) – in conjunction with 2nd Saturday Open Studios at ClearWater Artist Studios; doors open at 10am.  Main Gallery.  Bring your kids! The community is invited to join us and work collaboratively with each other and other attendees in the creation of two large collaborative collage/ painting works, on ClearWater's 'Giant Easels' - which will then be added to the exhibition! This is the third and final 'live collaborative painting' event produced as part of the exhibition, 'Visual Strategies: A Collaborative Project.' Find out more at

Want to be a lifeguard?
Concord Parks and Recreation is pleased to offer a new American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Course, which includes online learning and in-person water skills components. Registration available now through August 24. The course takes place August 27-September 8 with the in-person location at Mount Pleasant Swim Club. Participants must be 15 years or older and meet certain
perquisite skills in order to register. Fee is $200. Learn more and register at concordparksandrec.org.
