Join us for Viva Verde Earth Festival

This year the Cities of Concord and Kannapolis - along with Cabarrus County - will be holding a joint Earth Day Festival on Saturday, April 24, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at North Cabarrus Park, 760 Orphanage Rd. in Kannapolis.

We have some very interesting exhibitors on the roster!  The Carolina Raptor Center will be there with live birds.  Beholdance, a local service group for young people, will be providing all the children's activities including games, crafts, face painting and more.  Northeast Medical Center will team  up with the Catawba College Center for the Environment to share information on air quality and asthma.
We will also have the following classes going on during the event, for which participation is FREE:
-Composting 101, 10 am
-Weatherize Your Home, 11 am
-Yards Are More Than Grass, 12 am
-Local Food, 1 pm

Visitors certainly don't want to miss the music!  We've got the bluesy Jo Gore and the Alternative from Durham, southern rockers The Joe Davis Band from Kannapolis, funk pop rocker Zach Fowler from Charlotte, folk rockers Old Rusty Mandolin from Concord, and our MC, Jeff Whittington will team up with John Culbreath for some bluegrass, too!

What will participants get out of the event? Entertainment, education, fun, and unique opportunities for recycling (paper shredding, prescription medication, photo film & disposable cameras, eyeglasses, cell phones, all batteries, athletic shoes, electronics, plastic pill bottles, compact fluorescent bulbs)!  There will be something for everyone at the Viva Verde Earth Fest!
Should visitors bring anything to the event? Visitors should bring plants and books to swap, as well as all the items listed above to recycle.
Those with large quantities of paper (8 boxes or more) to be shredded should arrive early.  They should also bring lawn chairs or towels to sit on while they enjoy the music.

Booker Drive Street Realignment Project Starting in April, 2010
The City of Concord will be proceeding with the Booker Drive realignment project at the intersection with Salem Street.  The project  involves improvements to the intersection along with adjustments to other infrastructure.
There will be a traffic detour and limited access during the construction period, and efforts will be made to minimize inconveniences to the extent possible. It is anticipated that the construction start date will be April 26, 2010 and the project will take up to 120 days to complete. The contractor is Piedmont Asphalt Paving Co. of Concord.

This project is partially funded with Federal stimulus funds received through the Community Development Block Grant program and is designed to improve the safety and functionality of this intersection.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Engineering Construction Inspection Division at 704.920.5404 during regular working hours.
City of Concord Department of Fire & Life Safety Testing Fire Hydrants
The City of Concord Department of Fire & Life Safety will begin systematically testing fire hydrants throughout the City beginning the third week of April and lasting through the last week of May.
The Fire Department will be following the guidelines established by the Catawba Wateree Drought Management Advisory Group Low Inflow Protocol and will monitor water supply, rainfall and stream flow levels during the testing. All testing will be stopped if rainfall conditions and/or water levels necessitate termination.
Tests will be performed to ensure that the hydrants are accessible and working properly. Citizens may temporarily experience discoloration of the water in the areas where hydrant testing is taking place.
City staff will attempt to keep discoloration to a minimum by allowing hydrants to flow until the water is clear.  Please note testing will not impact the water quality.  Citizens who experience temporary discoloration should allow their faucets to run continuously until the water becomes clear.
For more information on hydrant testing, please contact the Concord Fire & Life Safety at 704-920-5535. For discolored water, please contact Water Resources at 704-920-5342.
