NCDOT temporarily closes Cox Mill Road
The NC Department of Transportation temporarily closed a section of Cox Mill Road in Concord for fifteen days beginning Tuesday, August 3, weather permitting. The road closure is part of a contract awarded in June to add a left turn lane from Poplar Tent Road to Cox Mill Road and to widen the bridge on Poplar Tent Road over Rocky River.
This closure will allow crews to lower the elevation of Cox Mill Road to tie in with the improvements on Poplar Tent Road. The entire project is scheduled for completion in November.
Motorists traveling on Cox Mill Road should use the signed detour through Christenbury Parkway, Derita Road, and Poplar Tent Road back to Cox Mill Road. Be sure to watch signs for construction information, stay alert, and obey the posted speed limit. For more information, please contact the NCDOT resident engineer at (704) 455-2958.
Park Watch program expands to Dorton Park
Park Ranger Pat Merritt is implementing a Park Watch Program for James Dorton Park. City of Concord Parks & Recreation is seeking volunteers to attend an orientation meeting on Monday, August 16 at 6:00pm at Dorton Park.
The Park Watch Program is similar to a typical Neighborhood Watch Program, with the idea of volunteers keeping their eyes open for suspicious activity in the parks and greenway trail. If any suspicious activity is seen, the volunteers will be instructed to call 911. They will also be instructed to stay uninvolved and to not confront anyone before calling 911.
The Park Watch Program has been implemented at McGee Park, Myers Park, and McEachern Greenway. Based on the pilot program in this location, the department is now evaluating how to refine and expand to other locations throughout the City.
A volunteer description will be distributed by Park Ranger Pat Merritt at the orientation meeting along with a Park Watch t-shirt for the volunteer. Participants are encouraged but not required to wear the t-shirt while walking in the park.
Those interested in volunteering for the Park Watch Program are invited to the orientation meeting at the picnic shelter at Dorton Park. The park is located at 5790 Poplar Tent Rd. in Concord. Refreshments will be served.
Cabarrus Avenue sidewalk extension
Between July 22 and September 10, contract crews will be extending the sidewalk on Cabarrus Avenue from Reed Street down to Branchview Drive. Signs will be erected and traffic will be maintained with some delays. In addition to sidewalks, the work will include installing additional storm drains, curb and gutter, and ADA Ramps. For further information, please visit the Concord Interactive Street Map, or contact Transportation Inspectors Terry Harris or Lonnie Bulger at 704-920-5365.

B-17 crew members to be honored at open house October 22-24
The Charlotte EAA Chapter 309 is offering historic flight experiences in its beautifully restored B-17 Flying Fortress “Aluminum Overcast.”  This aircraft is an example of the American heavy bomber that helped turn the tide of battle in World War II. The tour stop will be at Concord Regional Airport October 22 - 24, 2010, as the featured attraction of the open house with WWII aircraft static displays. Fly a mission back in time and feel the might of this magnificent aircraft, just as those brave young men did more than 50 years ago. The organization is looking for B-17 crew members to be honored at a dinner on October 23 and be provided a free ride on the B-17. Please email Susan Green or call 704-920-5915 for more information.
