Painting at Academy Recreation Center to impact availability
Next week, August 30-September 3, the Academy Recreation Center gym walls will be painted. Fumes will not greatly impact the facility, but staff will monitor work and adjust gym use protect the public.

From Friday, September 3 through Monday September 6 (Labor Day), the gym’s perimeter floor will be painted.  The floor surface requires a special epoxy paint to properly adhere to the floor and provide the required durability. This paint has a very strong odor and requires masks to be worn by the painters; the fumes will permeate the entire Academy facility. Proper ventilation procedures will be used to minimize the effect. However, for the safety of the public and staff, the Academy Recreation Center will be closed from Friday September 3 through Monday September 6. For more information, please call 704-920-5601.

Park Watch program expands to Caldwell Park
Park Ranger Pat Merritt is implementing a Park Watch Program for Caldwell Park. City of Concord Parks & Recreation is seeking volunteers to attend an orientation meeting on Tuesday, August 31 at 6:00pm at the Logan Optimist Club Shelter.

The Park Watch Program is similar to a typical Neighborhood Watch Program, with the idea of volunteers keeping their eyes open for suspicious activity in the parks and greenway trail. If any suspicious activity is seen, the volunteers will be instructed to call 911. They will also be instructed to stay uninvolved and to not confront anyone before calling 911.

The Park Watch Program has been implemented at McGee Park, Myers Park, McEachern Greenway, and Dorton Park. Based on the pilot program in these locations, the department is now evaluating how to refine and expand to other locations throughout the City.

A volunteer description will be distributed by Park Ranger Pat Merritt at the orientation meeting along with a Park Watch t-shirt for the volunteer. Participants are encouraged but not required to wear the t-shirt while walking in the park.

Those interested in volunteering for the Park Watch Program are invited to the orientation meeting at the Logan Optimist Club Shelter. The park is located at 362 Georgia Ave. SW in Concord. Refreshments will be served.

B-17 crew members to be honored at open house October 22-24
The Charlotte EAA Chapter 309 is offering historic flight experiences in its beautifully restored B-17 Flying Fortress “Aluminum Overcast.”  This aircraft is an example of the American heavy bomber that helped turn the tide of battle in World War II. The tour stop will be at Concord Regional Airport October 22 - 24, 2010, as the featured attraction of the open house with WWII aircraft static displays. Fly a mission back in time and feel the might of this magnificent aircraft, just as those brave young men did more than 50 years ago. The organization is looking for B-17 crew members to be honored at a dinner on October 23 and be provided a free ride on the B-17. Please email Susan Green or call 704-920-5915 for more information.

Scheduled bulk item collection begins January 1, 2011
Effective January 1, 2011, the City of Concord will require that all residents call our Customer CARE Center (704-920-5555) to schedule the curbside collection of bulk metal, old appliances, and used tires. Although the City of Concord has encouraged residents to schedule the collection of these items for some time, scheduling becomes mandatory in 2011. Items left on curb and not scheduled for pick up could lead to code enforcement penalties for property owners.

Currently, two trucks serve Concord citizens in collecting metal and tires. “By requiring citizens to schedule the collection of appliances, metal, and tires, we can eliminate the need for one of our two trucks. The retirement of one coworker during this year will allow us to eliminate his position, consolidate our operations, and move the truck into reserve status,” said Allen Scott, Director of Solid Waste Services. “With the cooperation of our citizens, this simple change will save the City 30,000 miles of driving, 3,000 gallons of diesel fuel, and approximately $55,000 annually.”

Please check the Solid Waste page on the City's website regularly for updates on any changes in the items you can recycle, place at the curb for collection, or any advanced preparation requirements.
