City of Concord budget recognized for tenth consecutive year
The City of Concord was recently announced as one of the 1,250 entities to receive the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada’s (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the fiscal year 2011-12 budget. It is the tenth consecutive year that the City has earned the honor. The GFOA’s program is the only national awards program in governmental budgeting. Visit concordnc.gov for more information.
 
Severe Weather Awareness Week 2012: March 4-10
Governor Perdue has declared March 4 - 10 as Severe Weather Awareness Week in an effort to spread the educational messages about how to prepare for various types of severe weather from tornadoes to flooding and lightning. Municipal emergency preparedness officials urge families to have safety plans for home, work, or school and practice these regularly. Visit the City Hall Blog to learn about how you can be ready for severe weather.
 
Informational workshop planned for Derita Road widening project
NCDOT and the City of Concord are planning the widening of Derita Road in Concord from Popular Tent Road to Concord Mills Boulevard. The City and NCDOT will hold a Citizens’ Informational Workshop for this project on Thursday, March 15, 2012 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Fire Station 9 Community Room located at 1020 Ivey Cline Road. The purpose of this workshop is for Concord and NCDOT representatives to provide information, answer questions, and accept written comments regarding this proposed project. Maps presenting the detailed designs will be on display. For more information, visit ncdot.gov.
 
Now seeking volunteers and vendors for Viva Verde Earth Fest!
Save the date! The third annual Viva Verde Earth Fest (a partnership between Concord, Kannapolis, and Cabarrus County) is coming from 10:00-3:00 on Saturday, April 14 at North Cabarrus Park. VVEF is a festival in honor of Earth Day that celebrates nature and environmental stewardship, providing opportunities for environmental education in a fun, family-friendly way! There will be information booths, live music, recycling opportunities, games, and more. Be sure to check out the event’s Facebook page; information is also available on the City’s website.

Fire hydrant maintenance to begin Monday, March 5
Over the next three months, Concord Fire and Life Safety will check and test fire hydrants throughout the City.   As a result, from time to time customers may notice short periods of lower water pressure, and a slight discoloration in water is possible. Customers who notice discolored water should simply allow water to run from a faucet until it clears up. Please contact the Customer Care Center at 704-920-5555 with any questions or concerns.
 
FAA to increase efficiency and reduce emissions in local airspace
This week, the FAA unveiled the Metroplex initiative, new procedures for air traffic control in the Charlotte and Atlanta areas that will allow aircraft to save fuel and get into and out of the airport more efficiently. While the biggest impacts will be at the major commercial airports (CLT and ATL), there will also be savings for those aircraft using Concord Regional Airport. More details at faa.gov.
 
Register now for the 2012 Bunny Run
Registration is open for the 2012 Bunny Run 5K and Fun Run on Saturday, April 7. The 1-mile Fun Run begins at 8:00 a.m. and the 5K Bunny Run begins at 8:30 a.m. The course has changed this year to accommodate the increasing amount of runners, with the race starting and finishing in Historic Downtown Concord.  Online registration and a special pre-registration price of $15 is available until March 30. Registration is $20 from March 31 through April 7. A registration brochure, map of the new course, and more information is available at concordnc.gov
 
City of Concord cemetery cleanup planned for March 12-16
On March 12-16, 2012 the cemetery grounds at Oakwood and West Concord Cemeteries and Rutherford Memorial Park will be cleaned in preparation of spring mowing and grounds work. The City of Concord asks for the public’s cooperation in removing all items placed on or near gravesites prior to March 12, 2012. Please do not replace flowers until after March 16. For more information call 704-786-8212.
 
Concord Youth Council new member application available
The City of Concord Youth Council is currently accepting applications for the 2012-13 school year. All rising ninth through eleventh graders residing in Cabarrus County and attending a public, private, or home school are encouraged to apply. The application deadline is May 11, 2012. Visit concordnc.gov for more information.
