Did you know that the City of Concord has local delegated authority to issue public water and sewer permits as well as private water permits? This authority enables us to provide a higher level of customer service to our development community. Last fiscal year, the Engineering Department issued 39 permits.
 
Fall is the time to prevent cankerworms and defoliation in the spring
The fall cankerworm (commonly called inchworms) has become a growing nuisance to trees and property owners in Cabarrus County over the last few years. Feeding larvae can defoliate and build bothersome webs in many tree species. Visit concordnc.gov to learn what you need to do this fall to help prevent them in the spring.
 
Take a Child Outside Week begins September 24
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences created Take a Child Outside Week, which is now observed by partners across the U.S. and Canada. Take a Child Outside Week 2012 is September 24-30, and the City of Concord will host outdoor scavenger hunt events that week. Visit the City Hall Blog to learn more.
 
Tune into Metrolina Forum
Did you know that Duke University is conducting major medical research in the Concord area?  The MURDOCK Study will be used by researchers to track the impact of lifestyle and the environment on your health and could make an impact for generations to come.  Learn more about the study and how you can be involved, Sunday, September 23, on TV64. Wake up early for (or set your DVR to record) Metrolina Forum on TV64 (TWC ch. 2/150/1150) Sunday at 5:30 a.m. This program will also be re-broadcast on Cabarrus County’s Channel 22.
 
Cabarrus Crime Stoppers Golf Tournament October 29
The tenth annual Cabarrus Area Crime Stoppers Golf Tournament is set for Monday, October 29 at the Cabarrus Country Club. Cabarrus Area Crime Stoppers, Inc. exists to ensure that our community is a safe place to live and conduct business through support of local law enforcement efforts. Proceeds from the tournament will help Crime Stoppers maintaining its crime tip hot line and tip rewards program. Pardon our dust at Logan and Hartsell Gyms
Logan and Hartsell Gyms are both in the process of having their hardwood floors thoroughly refinished. The floors are being sanded, repaired, repainted, and refinished. Additionally, both gyms will be fitted with brand new bleachers later this fall. These facilities and the Academy Recreation Center have all been substantially renovated over the last three years to improve security, energy efficiency, and customer service. Come visit to see the improvements!
 
Youth basketball registration underway
Registration opened September 1 for the 2012-2013 youth basketball season. The league is open to youth ages 4-15, and registration ends September 30. The fee is $30 for City residents or instructional leagues, and $50 for non-residents. For more information or to register online visit concordparksandrec.org.
 
United Way adult kickball tournament
Parks and Recreation will be hosting an adult kickball tournament with the proceeds going to support partner agencies of United Way of Central Carolinas. Come relive your youth and join in the fun with this school yard favorite. The double-elimination tournament will be November 10 and 11 at WW Flowe Park. The fee is $110.00 per team, and registration will available September 1 through October 31. For more information or a registration form please visit concordparksandrec.org.

You can plan your wedding and reception all in one place at the Historic Downtown Concord Wedding Show on Sunday, September 23 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Start at the Paramount Room located at 9 Union Street, North, and then continue the show by visiting shops, restaurants/caterers, and reception/party venues throughout Historic Downtown Concord. Fabulous door prizes are being given away. The show is free and open to the public. For more information contact the CDDC offices at 704-784-4208.
