Did you know the Concord Water Resources Department is home of North Carolina’s reigning champion pipe tapping team? At the NC AWWA-WEA conference, our team (they’re called the “Smokin Bits!”) will compete against others in the state once again this November to see which can set up and connect water service the quickest. The winner will then compete at the national level in Denver, Colorado.

Concord Police Department announces key promotions
Concord Police Chief Guy Smith has recently announced promotions to key positions. Gary Hatley has been promoted to the rank of Major and will command the criminal investigations unit. Robert Ledwell, Jr. has been promoted to Captain and will command the Adam District patrol operation. Learn more at

Concord Fire and Life Safety to launch breast cancer awareness initiative
The City of Concord Department of Fire and Life Safety will launch a month-long breast cancer awareness initiative on Monday, October 1. Firefighters in Concord will raise awareness to the public all month, with a pink element added to their daily work uniforms. Come by Fire Station 3, located at 100 Warren C. Coleman Boulevard N, at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, October 1 to be among the first to see the new look!
Get tips on cankerworm prevention from expert Jack McNeary
The public is invited to hear a presentation from local cankerworm expert Jack McNeary at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 2 at the Cabarrus County Cooperative Extension Center, located at 714 Cabarrus Avenue West in Concord. The fall cankerworm (commonly called inchworms) has become a growing nuisance to trees and property owners in Cabarrus County over the last few years. Feeding larvae can defoliate and build bothersome webs in many tree species. Visit to learn what you need to do this fall to help prevent them in the spring.
North Carolina-made films highlight Modern Film Fest
North Carolina sets the scene for five films featured at the fourth-annual Modern Film Fest next weekend at the historic Gem Theatre in Kannapolis. Festivalgoers will see a supernatural courtroom drama set in Concord, spend time with a hoarder of Hollywood relics, and relive the birth of a city around its mill. The feature film “Jimmy,” based on Robert Whitlow’s best selling novel, was shot in various locations in and around Concord last year including the Cabarrus County Courthouse and a residence in downtown. “Jimmy” will show at 7:00 p.m. on October 6. Cabarrus Crime Stoppers Golf Tournament October 29
The tenth annual Cabarrus Area Crime Stoppers Golf Tournament is set for Monday, October 29 at the Cabarrus Country Club. Cabarrus Area Crime Stoppers, Inc. exists to ensure that our community is a safe place to live and conduct business through support of local law enforcement efforts. Krispy Kreme Factory Tour
Senior citizens are encouraged to stroll through the factory and observe as the doughnuts are being made. The FREE tour is Friday, October 12, from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. and will depart from the Logan Multi-Purpose Center, 184 Booker Street NW.
Join Kristina Beamon for this popular fitness dance program that combines fast and slow rhythms that will tone and sculpt your body. Each class is only $3, and meets Mondays and Wednesdays (Continual) from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. at Academy Recreation Center, 147 Academy Avenue NW.
Carolina Shag Dance Class
Learn the fundamentals of the dance that originated in the Carolinas. Patty Blackmon’s popular class is open to singles and couples on Thursday evenings from October 4-25 at Academy Recreation Center, 147 Academy Avenue NW. Pre-registration is required; course fee is $35 per session with a $5 City resident discount. Beginners: 7:00 - 8:00 p.m.; Intermediate: 8:00 - 9:00 p.m.
United Way adult kickball tournament
Parks and Recreation will be hosting an adult kickball tournament with the proceeds going to support partner agencies of United Way of Central Carolinas. Come relive your youth and join in the fun with this school yard favorite. The double-elimination tournament will be November 10 and 11 at WW Flowe Park.
