Labor Day holiday on September 2, City service changes for next week
In observance of Labor Day, City of Concord offices will be closed on Monday, September 2. Garbage, recycling, and bulky waste collection by Waste Pro will operate on a one day delay next week, with Monday’s items collected on Tuesday, and Friday’s items collected on Saturday. However, customers are asked to place all yard waste at the curb by 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 3. Visit concordnc.gov for more information.
 
Housing director Angela Graham to lead multi-state organization
City of Concord Housing Director Angela Graham was sworn in as President of the Carolinas Council of Housing Redevelopment and Codes Officials (CCHRCO) at the organization's annual conference this week in South Carolina. Since joining the City of Concord as Housing Director in January of 2001, Graham has built a reputation as a motivator and outreach champion both within the City organization and the community in general. Community ceremony planned for Tuesday, September 11
Concord Fire and Life Safety invites the public to a community-wide Patriots’ Day remembrance ceremony at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 11. The brief memorial service will be held at Concord Fire Station 8, located at 1485 Old Charlotte Road.
 
Connect our Future – how you can make a difference
The CONNECT Our Future project will host several two-hour Community Growth Workshops on Tuesday, September 24 at Concord First Assembly Village, Suite 5. Attendees will help map out the growth for Cabarrus County that is coming in the next forty years. This is a great opportunity to invest two hours and really make a difference for Cabarrus County’s future.  There are three convenient times to participate: 9:00 -11:00 a.m., 1:00 -3:00 p.m. and 6:30-8:30 p.m. There is no cost to participate and parking is free. Mayor’s Golf Tournament to benefit youth programs September 28
The sixteenth annual Mayor's Golf Tournament will be held on Friday, September 27 at Rocky River Golf Club. Proceeds from the tournament benefit youth programs in our community, and the deadline to enter is September 20. Sponsorship opportunities are available. G.I.F.T.E.D. Girls: promotes reading comprehension and life-skills development to school-age girls – every other Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.

Register for youth basketball in September
Parks and Recreation will accept registration for the 2013-2014 youth basketball season through September 30. Youth basketball is open for boys and girls ages 3-15. The playing season runs from November until March. For more information or to register online beginning September 1, visit concordparksandrec.org.
 
NEW adult coed flag football league
Coed flag football is a new adult athletics offering, and registration will be open through September 30. The league season will include ten regular season games and a post-season single-elimination tournament. For more information or to register, visit concordparksandrec.org.
 
Sign up now for youth art classes
Youth art classes will begin next week with Drawing I and II, instructed by Kelly Slusarick. Youth will learn basic to advanced skills in drawing, art techniques, and vocabulary. Drawing I (for ages 6-12) meets Tuesdays from 4:30-6:00 p.m., beginning September 3. Drawing II is open to graduates of Drawing I or youth ages 10-16, and meets Wednesdays from 4:30-6:00 p.m. beginning September 4. The registration fee for each session is $35, with a $5 city resident discount available, plus a one-time $15 materials fee payable to the instructor. All sessions at Academy Recreation Center.
