Update on garbage collection – landfill delays
For several weeks, we have received reports from Waste Pro of major delays at the landfill, with trucks lined up for hours waiting to access the area currently being filled. Republic Services, who operates the landfill, offers the following information:

"The lynchpin cause for delays on site is weather; i.e., excessive rain far exceeding historical averages and the resulting effect on the working face is an exceedingly muddy condition that causes (i) need for slowed down (safer) processing and (ii) unavoidable struck/obstructing trucks (estimating every 4th or 5th unloading truck getting stuck and needing a tow).

Secondarily, and particular to last week’s weather effect, there was a day delay for the City of Charlotte collection operations due to winter storms on 12/9-12/11. This caused the City [of Charlotte] to generate 2.5x its normal truck traffic through the LF from 12/11-12/15 (i.e., 150 City trucks running through the LF vs. 60 in the normal course, daily)."

We anticipate continued rain and muddy conditions at the landfill may cause additional delays over the coming weeks. All customers should leave carts at the curb until they are collected. Find out more at
