Segment of Virginia Avenue SE closed for utility repair
Thursday, November 15, 2018

Update: December 14, 2018 - Crews have lost 9 workdays on this project due to weather conditions. The updated project timeline has completion estimated at January 11, 2019.

CONCORD – City of Concord Water Resources crews have closed a segment of Virginia Avenue SE due to a collapsed stormwater pipe and resulting sinkhole at the edge of the roadway.

The closure is located on a short segment of Virginia between Louise Drive SE and Sunset Drive SE, so multiple alternative routes through the area are available.

The timing of the closure will be extended, likely through December, as there as other section of the pipe are also damaged and a quicker repair to the affected area is not possible. Water Resources had previously planned to replace the pipe and a water main in conjunction with a planned Transportation Department project. The Transportation project will reconstruct the surface of Virginia Street SE between Corban and Hillcrest Avenues and add new sidewalk; this project is still in the easement acquisition phase.

Motorists and pedestrians should follow posted detour routes and exercise caution in the area. For more information, please contact Water Resources at 704-920-5300.
