US Highway 601 and NC Highway 3 intersection improvement to begin
Thursday, January 29, 2015

CONCORD – The City of Concord, in coordination with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), will soon begin the project to widen portions of US Highway 601 South and NC Highway 3 (Union Street South). This project is included in the current NCDOT State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) as Project C-4918B and is funded through the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program (CMAQ). Planning studies were completed to document the impacts of the proposed project on the human and natural environment.

JT Russell and Sons, Inc., the awarded contractor, will initiate construction during the beginning of February and complete construction by Monday, August 31, 2015.

Private utility companies, such as Time Warner Cable, Windstream Communications, and PSNC Energy are relocating their utilities in preparation of the roadway construction.

Like most roadway projects, there might be some additional disruptions, delays, and congestion during construction, but at least one lane of traffic will remain open at all times and the ingress and egress to all local businesses and dwellings will be maintained during construction.

The project will be temporarily deferred during the Easter, Memorial Day, and Independence Day holidays; during the NASCAR, NHRA, and Auto Fair events; and during times of unusually heavy traffic.
