City of Concord winter weather update - Thursday afternoon [updated 4pm Friday]

UPDATED Friday, Jan. 19 at 4:00 p.m.: City services resumed today, with Rider Transit starting on time this morning, and solid waste collection beginning later in the morning once additional melting occurred. City Solid Waste crews have progressed through most of the City and will finish collecting yard waste (including this week's Loose Leaf schedule) on Saturday.

Waste Pro continues working to complete the Wednesday Garbage, Recycling, and Bulky waste routes today after starting their service around 11:00 a.m. Waste Pro will work as late as practical this evening; any areas of the Wednesday route that Waste Pro cannot reach today will be first on their list Saturday morning. Waste Pro anticipates completing collection for Thursday customers on Saturday, and Friday customers on Sunday.

CONCORD – Concord's snowfighters continued treating designated bare pavement routes with salt and sand today and moved into higher volume collector and subdivision streets. A new Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Concord covering tonight and tomorrow morning, due to anticipated black ice. Road conditions could be hazardous tomorrow morning before significant warming on Friday afternoon. Crews will continue to treat icy spots, including shady areas and hills, as needed.

City of Concord service updates:

  • The plan for resuming Solid Waste services has changed. Republic Services has informed the City that it will open the CMS Landfill on Sunday, allowing a two-day delayed collection beginning when road conditions allow on Friday. All customers, including in the Wednesday area, will receive service this week.
  • Waste Pro will collect garbage, recycling, and bulky waste from Wednesday customers on Friday, Thursday customers on Saturday, and Friday customers on Sunday. As a reminder, recycling and bulky waste collection follows an every-other-week schedule and customers can confirm their week at
  • City Solid Waste crews will resume yard waste collection (including loose leaf collection) Friday and work to collect as much as possible by the end of the day Saturday. Yard waste collection will resume the normal schedule next week.
  • Rider Transit plans to resume service Friday at a yet-undetermined time. Staff is evaluating conditions this afternoon to determine Friday's start time. After 5:00 p.m. today, passengers can check for updates at, the Rider Transit Facebook page, and via the customer service line at 704-920-7433.
  • City Parks will reopen at 9:00 a.m. Friday; the Academy, Hartsell, and Logan Recreation Centers will be open beginning at 10:00 a.m. Friday.
